WHY BOND IS REQUIRED: When a buyer purchases a vehicle from a seller and fails to obtain the endorsed vehicle title, the DMV will not transfer title upon request. In this instance, a defective title bond is required by the DMV in order to clear title and register the vehicle. The bond guarantees damages up to and including the bond amount in the event that the original title holder files a valid claim on the vehicle.
